The Goedken Family began in 1954 with the marriage of Vern Goedken and Bonnie Briggs in Dubuque, Iowa.  Vern joined the Airforce and Bonnie became a registered nurse.  After Vern left the service , he became a student at the University of Iowa and they lived in a mobile home in Iowa City. Bonnie soon became pregnant and very ill.  They moved back to Dubuque in 1955 to live with relatives.  Bill was born, and they returned to Iowa City, living in a duplex on College street.  A few years later, Bonnie became pregnant and ill once again.  She returned to Dubuque for the remainder of the pregnancy.  Tom was born in Dubuque in 1958.  Vern finished his degree and joined them all on North Booth Street.  Bob was born in 1961, while Vern was working for a local accounting firm.  The family moved to Johnson street in Iowa City when Vern bought into an accounting firm in Coralville. After having 6 miscarriages over a 6 year period, John Paul was born in Iowa City in 1968.  Vern's business merged with other accounting firms and became Dee, Gosling and Company.  The family bought their first home on Talwrn Court in Iowa City, where they live for many years.  The boys grew, going to elementary school and high school in Iowa City.  Vern was diagnosed with cancer in 1978, and passed away that year.  Vern and Bonnie had been married for 24 years.

At the time, Bill was just out of college, and Bob was just beginning college.  A few years later, Bonnie met Jerry Ready, a doctor of education who worked for the Davenport Area Education Agency.  They were married on the back porch of the house on Talwrn Court.  Within the year, they moved to Davenport with John Paul, settling in a house on Cheyenne Avenue.  After John Paul went on to college, Jerry retired.  Bonnie and Jerry moved to Vincennes, Indiana (Jerry's home town) and bought what was left of a burnt-down house in the country.  They moved a trailer onto the property and began to rebuild their retirement house, where they presently live.  Bonnie and Jerry have been married now for 22 years.
